The Zen of Gus

Some recent sayings Gus has coined around our house:

"What is the sound a sound makes?"

"When you see a bee, you must jump into a big mud puddle."

"Dragons are dangerous."

"When you throw a snowball in the air, you must to watch out." (That one is my favorite)

Deep Gus.  Deep.

Why I Refuse to Register with a Political Party

Well, yes, pancreatic cancer is apparently worse than lung cancer, but I'd rather not sign up for either.

Overheard at Breakfast

Gus to his Rice Krispies: No, you're not a little boy, I'm a little boy.
Gus, in a slightly higher pitched voice: I'm a little boy.
Gus, in his normal voice: No.  You're a krispie; I'm a little boy.
Gus, in his "krispie" voice: I'm not a krispie, I'm a little boy.
Normal Gus: No, you're a krispie, and I'm going to eat you.
Krispie Gus: Don't eat me.
Normal Gus: I'm a little boy and I'm going to eat you.  Chomp.

I'm not sure if I should be worried that my son is having existential arguments with his breakfast cereal, or just be relieved that he's winning said arguments with his breakfast cereal.

Better Late?

A few months ago, Amelia and I were woefully behind in getting out Magnus' official birth announcements.  So with Christmas rolling around, we figured, why not send it out at the same time as our Christmas cards?  Save some postage, right?  We planned it all out and figured we could have it all ready to address and get sent out in early November.  Perfect.  Then life happened, and an illness happened, and FedEx happened, and then life happened some more.  But finally, they're in the mail.   Just in time for Christmas two weeks ago.

If things stay true to form, they'll be returned to us due to insufficient postage, and you can expect to receive Magnus' birth announcement immediately prior to his engagement announcement, so start saving the date.  They're thinking about a summer wedding and I hear the weather will be lovely in June 2037.

In all seriousness though, I think they turned out really, really, really cool. A lot cool even. Especially if you're a fan of Magnus - Robot Fighter, which was where we got the announcement's inspiration.  Big thanks go to Amelia, my sister-in-law Sigrid, Tyler Whitacre, and everyone else that helped pull this thing together.  I'll try to remember to post some more info in a few weeks after everyone's had a chance to get theirs in the mail.  Sadly, we were a bit limited in the number we could send out, so if you didn't get one from us, please know it pained us not to send it out to everyone we wanted to, so let's still be friends.

Year-End Magnus Update

At church last week, someone told Amelia the following:

"Look at Magnus, he's getting so chubby. (Pause) He looks just like his mama."

I'm pretty sure in this person's mind, these were two separate, unrelated thoughts, but it was still funny the way it came out.

Regardless, Magnus really is getting chubby.  He continues to be such a sweet, happy baby.  He is getting more and more interactive.  He laughs and coos.  He is getting better at grabbing things with his hands.  He can roll over onto his side, and by repeating this over and over he can spin himself around a bit.  Here are some recent pics (more after the jump):

Amelia's Birthday 2013

For Amelia's birthday, we went to the Mapparium at the Mary Baker Eddy Library here in Boston.  It's something we've been meaning to do for years, but finally got around to.  It was pretty cool, if a bit of a short tour.  With the snow, it was a beautiful day for a beautiful woman.

Here's our birthday girl, looking stylish in her new birthday coat.

Christmas 2013

Merry Christmas!  This was our year to stay home for Christmas (we alternate years traveling and staying home).  Amelia's mom and little sister also were able to join us.

We decked the halls and had a very festive little condo for a few weeks.  Gus' favorite part was probably the Advent calendars, seeing as how we had to constantly prevent him from opening the Advent every day.

Thanksgiving 2013

For Thanksgiving, we stayed here and had an amazing time with friends.  Amelia volunteered to make the turkey for everyone this year, and I thought it turned out terrific.  She then also made a rice pilaf side.  All our friends are tremendous chefs, and I downed three plates, plus desserts.

Things Gus Says...

  • "balloons" = "kabloons"
  • "instruments" = "ointsruments" (we think he combined instrument with ointment from his medical bag)
  • "Magnus" = "pudgy little Magnus" (we're not sure why Gus feels the need to add these two adjectives, but he often does)
  • "tut tut" = Gus' current all-purpose exclamation (from Winnie-The-Pooh's "tut tut, looks like rain")
  • "I'm not an early riser, I'm a boy!"
  • "You're a fisherman. I'm a fisher-boy, and Magnus is a fisher-baby."
